Tragic End To Legal Battle As Critically Ill Baby, Indi Gregory, Dies After Life Support Is Turned Off

The decision to remove her life support at a hospice followed a ruling made by Court of Appeal judges on Friday, which prohibited the removal of life support at her home.

A critically ill baby at the centre of a legal battle has died after her life support was turned off. Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old baby with mitochondrial disease, passed away at 01:45 GMT on Monday at a hospice after the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham concluded that they could do no more for her.

Indi’s father, Dean Gregory, expressed his grief, stating that her mother, Claire Staniforth, held her for her final breaths.

Mr Gregory also expressed anger, heartbreak, and shame, claiming that the NHS and the courts not only deprived Indi of the chance to live a longer life but also took away her dignity to pass away in the family home where she belonged.

Christian Concern, an organization supporting the family, confirmed that Indi was transferred to a hospice on Saturday with a security escort.

They reported that she remained relaxed and slept during the journey. At the hospice, her life support was removed, and she was provided with further ventilation.

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, which operates the QMC, expressed its condolences to Indi’s family, acknowledging the long and challenging journey they have endured.

The spokesperson for the trust stated, “We are all deeply saddened by the death of Indi and wish to express our heartfelt condolences to her family at this terribly difficult time.”

Indi’s parents, from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, have fought numerous legal battles over the past several months in an attempt to prolong their daughter’s life.

Indi suffered from mitochondrial disease, an incurable condition that impairs the body’s energy production. Despite medical specialists deeming her treatment as futile and causing pain, her parents, supported by the Christian Legal Centre, have sought to convince the courts that she should continue to receive care.

The couple’s efforts also included an unsuccessful attempt to transfer Indi to a hospital in Rome.
