King Charles made a rare public appearance on Easter Sunday, attending the traditional church service at Windsor Castle. This marked one of his few public engagements since being diagnosed with cancer.
Despite his ongoing treatment, the 75-year-old monarch looked in good spirits as he joined the Queen and other members of the royal family for the occasion.
As King Charles emerged from St George’s Chapel, he was greeted by well-wishers shouting “Happy Easter” and applause from the crowd. Queen Camilla was presented with a posy of white and yellow flowers by a young boy.
The King went on a walkabout, chatting and shaking hands with the public, who were delighted to see him.
Notably absent from the service were the Prince and Princess of Wales. This comes just over a week after Princess Kate released an emotional video message revealing her ongoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
The absence of the Prince and Princess was felt, but the focus remained on the King’s presence and his efforts to reassure the public about his own health.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman described the Easter service as a “considerable turning point” for the royal household. He noted the positive progress in the King’s health since his cancer diagnosis and emphasized the impact of his public appearance in boosting the spirits of royalists everywhere.
The King’s attendance at church was seen as a significant move to reassure the public, especially after the shock news about Princess Kate’s diagnosis.
In his Easter sermon at Canterbury Cathedral, the Archbishop of Canterbury, commended both the King and the Princess for their dignity in facing their respective health challenges. He encouraged the congregation to pray for them and acknowledged their openness’s positive impact on others.
Princess Kate’s video message followed weeks of speculation and conspiracy theories about her whereabouts.
Her absence from official engagements since December had fueled rumours, which were further intensified when she admitted to editing a family photograph posted on Mother’s Day.
However, the King expressed his pride in his daughter-in-law for her courage in speaking about her treatment, and both Prince Harry and Meghan offered words of support.
Despite his illness, the King has continued to carry out low-key official duties behind palace walls. He recently held an audience with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and welcomed the High Commissioners of Jamaica, Tanzania, and Singapore.
In an audio address broadcast to a congregation at Worcester Cathedral, where the Royal Maundy Service was held in his absence, the King reaffirmed his commitment to serve with his whole heart, as he pledged during his coronation.
