Pope Francis, after spending five weeks in the hospital where his life was at risk twice, surprised many with his decision to forego a helicopter ride back to the Vatican. Instead, he chose to travel by car, mingling with the people as he made his way home.
Early this morning, senior officials confirmed to Sky News that Pope Francis had declined the usual papal transport, preferring a more grounded journey.
His departure from Gemelli Hospital was met with immense anticipation, as at least 3,000 people gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the beloved pontiff. Security was at its highest, with police ensuring order amid the emotional crowd.
An Unexpected Gesture: The Power of Yellow Flowers
At midday, Pope Francis appeared on a hospital balcony, his voice still weak from treatment.
Despite his frailty, he took a moment to acknowledge the devotion of one particular woman—Carmela Mancuso from Calabria—who had been leaving yellow flowers outside the hospital every day since his arrival on February 14.
“I see a woman with yellow flowers, brava,” he said, recognizing her dedication. Inspired by her symbolic gesture, he instructed his security team to collect the flowers before making a remarkable decision: he would not return straight to the Vatican.

Instead, he wished to visit his favourite Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, carrying the yellow flowers with him.
A Spontaneous Detour: A Pope Francis of Surprises
In a city accustomed to papal protocol, the convoy’s sudden change of route caused quite a stir. Traffic in Rome’s bustling city centre was momentarily disrupted as the Pope’s vehicle made its way to the basilica.
Upon arrival, he handed the flowers to the basilica’s cardinal, asking for them to be placed on the altar of the Virgin Salus Populi Romani—a deeply personal act of prayer and gratitude.
But the surprises didn’t end there. As his car approached the Vatican, the Pope spotted a woman with a dog near the entrance and insisted on stopping to greet her. Stefania, a local resident, later shared her brief encounter: “I just told him, ‘Welcome back home.’ He seemed very tired. I’ll keep praying for him.”

Now back in his Vatican residence, Pope Francis faces a two-month recovery period, during which his activities will be limited.
However, as today’s events showed, he remains a Pope of spontaneity, faith, and a deep connection with the people—qualities that may challenge his adaptation to a more restricted routine following medical advice.
