Reform UK has reinstated a Sunderland councillor who previously apologised for making offensive social media comments about Nigerians.
Glenn Gibbins, elected to represent the Hylton Castle ward in Sunderland last month, came under scrutiny after remarks he posted online in 2024 resurfaced.
In the now-deleted post, Gibbins wrote: “Carnt [sic] believe amount of Nigerians in town… should melt them all down and fill in the pot holes!!”

Speaking to local newspaper ChronicleLive, Gibbins described the comments as “intended as jokes”, adding that they were “made in extremely poor taste and with poor judgement”.
“I fully recognise that these comments were entirely inappropriate and I sincerely apologise to anyone who may have been offended by them,” he added.

It has since emerged that Reform UK has completed an investigation into the matter and decided to reinstate Gibbins.
A spokesperson for the party confirmed that Gibbins had been “issued with a final written warning”.
“He has apologised for making the post and accepts that it was made in extremely poor taste showing poor judgment,” the spokesperson said.
Labour Criticises Reform UK’s Decision To Reinstate Councillor
The decision has drawn criticism from Labour Party chair Anna Turley, who condemned Reform UK leader Nigel Farage over the outcome.
“Nobody who has made such disgusting comments is fit to serve the public – shamefully Nigel Farage clearly thinks that’s not the case,” she said.
“He must reverse this decision and prove that there is no place for racism in Reform UK.”
