Emergency services were called to HMP Wandsworth on Saturday morning, where comedian and former television presenter Russell Brand is being held ahead of his sentencing.

Brand, 51, was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, with the judge ordering him to remain in custody until his sentencing hearing on Monday. The incident at the south London prison prompted the attendance of ambulance crews and firefighters, although authorities have not disclosed further details about what happened.

Three ambulances and two ambulance response cars were reported to have entered HMP Wandsworth on Saturday, while three fire engines attended the prison and remained outside.

Several firefighters were also seen entering the facility on foot, with the precise circumstances of the incident remaining unclear. Officials confirmed that the situation had been resolved, but did not identify the prisoner involved or disclose whether anyone had suffered injuries.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "At 0946, Firefighters were called to HMP Wandsworth. The incident was over for crews by 1020."

A Prison Service spokesperson added: "We have been made aware of an incident at height at HMP Wandsworth this morning, which has now been resolved."

The London Ambulance Service confirmed that it received the call at 9.33am and dispatched several emergency resources. These included its Hazardous Area Response Team, an Incident Response Officer, an ambulance and a fast response unit.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 9.33am today to reports of an incident at HMP Wandsworth. We sent a number of resources, including our Hazardous Area Response Team, an Incident Response Officer, an ambulance and fast response unit."

Visitors outside the prison also spoke about conditions inside the facility, although their accounts have not been independently verified. One woman told the Mirror that her boyfriend had heard Brand was struggling with the food provided to inmates, describing the meals as "slop". Another visitor said her son had told her that Brand was being held nearby and that prisoners were not allowed to see or speak to him.

A third visitor described the prison's meal arrangements, saying inmates received food at noon and 4.30pm, while breakfast could be purchased from the canteen using their own money. The visitor said the meals could include beef or cheese pasties and described the food as poor. These accounts come amid longstanding concerns about living conditions at the prison.

Russell Brand Sentencing After Rape And Sexual Assault Convictions

Brand remains in custody following his conviction on Thursday and is due to return to court for sentencing on Monday. He reportedly showed little emotion as the verdicts were delivered, closing his eyes when the jury found him guilty of rape. When the judge ordered him to remain in custody, Brand responded: "Yes My Lord."

Before entering the dock to hear the verdicts, Brand told his wife, Laura Gallacher, "I love you". Gallacher, whose father is former Ryder Cup-winning golfer Bernard Gallacher, was seen leaning forward in the public gallery after the decision was announced.

Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, asked the judge to grant him bail over the weekend as an "act of humanity", arguing that it would allow him to say goodbye to his children. The request was refused because of concerns that Brand might abscond rather than return to court for sentencing.

The Metropolitan Police has also confirmed that investigations into two other rape allegations against Brand remain ongoing. Previous court hearings revealed that one complaint involved a woman who dated Brand when he was 30 and she was a 16-year-old schoolgirl.

HMP Wandsworth Prison Conditions Under Scrutiny After Inspection

HMP Wandsworth is a Category B prison in south London, with a smaller Category C resettlement unit. The facility houses more than 1,500 prisoners and has previously faced criticism over overcrowding, cleanliness and the condition of its accommodation. Inspectors issued prison management with an immediate action plan following an inspection in April and May 2024.

The inspection report described living conditions as poor and raised concerns about the number of prisoners sharing cells designed for single occupancy. According to the report, 80% of prisoners were sharing cells intended for one person, while damaged furniture, flooring, windows and sinks were found across the facility.

Inspectors also highlighted problems with showers, heating and hot water, alongside concerns about blocked or broken observation panels. Vermin remained an issue despite improvement efforts, with prisoners reporting frequent sightings of rodents and inspectors finding evidence of rat droppings in residential areas.

Russell Brand's Convictions And Earlier Allegations

The convictions follow a trial examining allegations of sexual offences involving multiple women. In one incident dating to 2004, a woman accused Brand of sexually assaulting her at the Nordic bar in Soho by grabbing her breasts during a gathering involving former MTV colleagues. She also alleged that he dragged her into the men's toilets and raped her orally, but the jury found Brand not guilty of that charge.

A separate allegation concerned an incident at Capital Radio in 2005. A station worker alleged that Brand pinned her against a wall, groped her and kissed her without consent during a visit to the broadcaster.

Brand's sentencing is scheduled for Monday following his convictions for rape and sexual assault. The separate police investigations remain ongoing.
