Anthony Scaramucci Claims Donald Trump ‘Hates’ Republicans After Midterm Election Defeat
Donald Trump’s former White House communications director says the president has little interest in the Republican Party’s future, as speculation grows over potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

Donald Trump has little affection for the Republican Party, and the feeling is mutual, according to his former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci.
Speaking to HuffPost UK, Scaramucci welcomed the Democrats’ performance in the US midterm elections, which saw the opposition party take control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in a significant setback for Trump and the Republicans.
Scaramucci, who was dismissed from the White House after just 11 days in 2016, said the election result reflected growing dissatisfaction with the president’s leadership. Several Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, have publicly pointed to the war in Iran and Trump’s tariff policies as factors contributing to rising living costs and the party’s heavy electoral defeat.
Trump’s Relationship With Republicans Faces Renewed Scrutiny
The election outcome marks a dramatic contrast with the Republican Party’s previous willingness to support Trump, despite controversies surrounding his presidency.
Attention is now shifting towards the party’s potential presidential candidates for 2028, with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among the names being discussed.
However, Scaramucci believes Trump has little concern about who eventually takes over the Republican leadership.
“He almost wants Gavin Newsom to be his successor,” said Scaramucci, referring to California's Democratic governor, who has repeatedly clashed with the president.
He suggested that such an outcome would represent Trump giving the Republican Party a symbolic middle finger.
“By the way, he hates them [Republican Party] and they hate him,” Scaramucci claimed.
Despite the bitter relationship, Scaramucci predicted Trump would accept the midterm election results, unlike his response to losing the 2020 presidential election. He also suggested the president could become more willing to work with Democrats.
“Whatever you think he’s going to do, he’s wants to do the opposite. If he takes consensus of what people think, he’ll do the opposite. That’s his nature,” Scaramucci claimed.
“He always likes to do the opposite of what everybody thinks. He is such a narcissist, that he wants to be able to say to people, ‘you guys were nobodies before I got here and you’re nobodies after I leave.’”
JD Vance And Marco Rubio Told To Distance Themselves From Trump
Scaramucci also had advice for Vance and Rubio as they consider their political ambitions ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
He believes both men should begin creating distance between themselves and Trump rather than remaining closely associated with his administration.
“They’re very ambitious guys. I would be racing out of the room right now, I’m not running. Stay in the administration,” he said.
“They got to get some distance between themselves and Trump.”
The former White House communications director also identified Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as another potential contender for the Republican presidential nomination.
Scaramucci predicted DeSantis would “make a very big play” for the nomination, although he would first have to overcome perceptions of being “MAGA-lite”.
Scaramucci Addresses Questions About Trump’s Health
Scaramucci also dismissed speculation that Trump has dementia, while acknowledging what he described as age-related physical and cognitive decline.
Drawing on his decades of familiarity with the president, he said:
“I’m not a doctor but I’m a Trump observer, I’ve known for him for 30 years. He is in neuro-degenerate decline, physio-decline, related to age. He does not have dementia. He does have some venous insufficiencies, sufficient with his age and general lack of exercise other than playing golf.

“He’s not in bad shape or an idiot. He just did 24 rallies in 19 days. If you think about why he looks so subdued, he had his ass kicked. But he’s also exhausted.”
Scaramucci also pointed to Trump's final campaign speech earlier in the week, during which the president went on a lengthy rant about the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
He described Trump's demeanour as “completely flat as a pancake”, attributing it to exhaustion following an intense campaign period.
“He’s burnt out to a cinder, [but] his whole mind is vigorous for an 80 year old man who has the responsibility of the presidency,” he said.
His comments come as attention increasingly turns to the future of the Republican Party and the political figures who could compete to succeed Trump in 2028.
