While criticism dominated much of the public response, some of Trump’s supporters defended his remarks, claiming Mueller’s investigation caused lasting political damage and alleging unfair treatment of the former president.

Democratic figures and media commentators have reacted sharply to President Donald Trump after he posted a message appearing to celebrate the death of former FBI director and special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller, who led the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election, died on Friday night at the age of 81.

His family confirmed the news in a statement to the Associated Press on Saturday, though no official cause of death has been released. According to two individuals familiar with the matter, he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Shortly after the family’s request for privacy, Trump took to his Truth Social platform, writing: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Political Reaction To Trump’s Mueller Death Post Intensifies

The post prompted immediate criticism from Democratic politicians and prominent commentators, many of whom described the remarks as inappropriate and offensive.

Political influencer Harry Sisson wrote on X: “I expect every Republican who was outraged at people for celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death to immediately condemn Trump for saying, ‘I’m glad he’s dead’ about Robert Mueller. This is disgusting.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the statement fell short of the standards expected from a sitting president.

Democratic Representative Dan Goldman paid tribute to Mueller, calling him “a true public servant”, while adding: “Yet the President of the United States disgustingly celebrates Mueller’s death simply because he exposed Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election.”

Mixed Conservative Response As Trump Supporters Defend Comments

While criticism dominated much of the public response, some of Trump’s supporters defended his remarks, claiming Mueller’s investigation caused lasting political damage and alleging unfair treatment of the former president.

At the same time, not all conservative voices backed Trump’s statement. Brit Hume wrote: “This is the kind of stuff Trump does that makes people not just oppose him but hate him. There was no need to say anything.”

Meanwhile, journalist and former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan criticised media coverage of the incident, stating: “Very few acknowledgments of how insane and inappropriate it is for the president to respond like this.” He added, “Imagine their response if it was [former President Joe] Biden.”

Debate Over Presidential Conduct And Public Discourse

Mueller, widely regarded for his decades of public service, remained a polarising figure in American politics following his investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign.

The strong reactions to the president’s post reflect the enduring divisions surrounding both men and the legacy of that inquiry. See reactions below:
