Liz Truss has reacted positively to warnings that the United Nations is facing an “imminent financial collapse”, a stance that has quickly attracted attention – and mockery – online.
The former prime minister described the warning, issued by UN Secretary General António Guterres, as “excellent” news.

Speaking earlier this week, Guterres cautioned that the organisation’s financial crisis was “threatening programme delivery” and that the UN could potentially run out of money by July, according to the BBC.
Truss shared her response on X, welcoming the prospect of financial turmoil for the international body she has previously criticised. However, her comments were swiftly met with a wave of reactions highlighting the apparent contradiction in her position.

Liz Truss and the UN Funding Crisis
Only last month, Truss publicly urged Donald Trump to “dismantle” the United Nations, reinforcing her sceptical view of multilateral institutions.
Her latest intervention appears to align with that stance, celebrating warnings that suggest the organisation’s future operations could be at risk.
Guterres has repeatedly raised concerns about funding shortfalls, warning that they could severely undermine the UN’s ability to carry out its global programmes.
Mini-Budget Legacy Fuels Online Backlash
Critics were quick to point out the irony of Truss welcoming financial collapse elsewhere, given the economic chaos associated with her own time in Downing Street. She resigned after just 49 days as prime minister, following the fallout from her mini-Budget.
That package, delivered by then Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, announced £45 billion in unfunded tax cuts. The move sent interest rates soaring and triggered a sharp fall in the value of the pound, prompting widespread market turmoil and political pressure.
Recent Remarks Add to Controversy
This is not the first time Truss has attracted ridicule in recent weeks. During an appearance on a Daily Telegraph podcast last week, she claimed that Donald Trump is facing a left-wing “armed insurrection”.
In the same interview, she also expressed surprise that the Royal Navy would refuse to carry out illegal orders from ministers, comments that further fuelled criticism and confusion about her views on governance and the rule of law.
