The ever-talented Willow Smith, child to Jada and Will Smith, has joined forces with close friend Tyler Cole to form a duo band called @Theanxiety.
Their debut album also titled The Anxiety has been out for a month now and has proven to be very different from Willow’s usually ambient sound.
The debut single’s music video “Hey You” rings of the ghosts of classic rock and roll with bright coloured visuals, nothing unfamiliar to Willow’s fans. Remember the Indigo video? Willow must love looking like an Avatar character.
The album’s vocals are a stretch from what we know of Willow’s singing. Showing the artist’s willingness to challenge her musical talent. We may have Tyler Cole to thank for bringing out the rock star in the usually harmonious singer.
What is Willow Smith without her philosophical wisdom? The album drops a ton of positive messages delivered in the chaotic and disruptive manner of rock and roll. Statements such as “I am not my body” and “The momentum of your growth is rooted in stillness” can be seen scribbled in graffiti on the walls of the small room in the “Hey you” music video.
Yes, let us take a moment to ponder on these wise words. @Theanxiety seems to foresee our isolation in the world. The visuals in the debut single are shot in one small, messy room that gives a claustrophobic feeling.
As if an outcry, that our chaos and anxiety are okay too. Something that the duo seem to have drawn on in the making of the album. The message is out, that there truly is no end to Willow Smith’s musical talent!
