Wesley Fofana, the 22-year-old was excluded from the Blues squad’s pre-season tour to the United States to undergo “specialist medical assessments”.
The London club announced that the examinations on Fofana’s knee “regrettably confirmed the necessity for an operation”.
Chelsea acquired the French center-back from Leicester for a hefty £70m last summer.
“Wesley will now commence his recovery and collaborate with the club’s medical team at Cobham during the rehabilitation phase,” a Chelsea statement elaborated.
This injury setback marks another blow for Fofana, who suffered a leg fracture during his time at Leicester in August 2021.
Moreover, he endured over four months on the sidelines last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing against AC Milan in the Champions League.
