Britons are being encouraged to take part in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory in Europe (VE) Day this May, as it may be the last opportunity to thank the surviving veterans who played a crucial role in World War II.

VE Day, observed on 8 May, commemorates the day in 1945 when the Allies accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender, marking the end of the war in Europe.

To kick off the countdown to this significant milestone, EastEnders star Ross Kemp and Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes visited Hermitage Primary School in Tower Hamlets, east London, where they shared stories, discussed the importance of VE Day and enjoyed food with the students.

Honouring Sacrifice and Strengthening Communities

Reflecting on the anniversary, Kemp emphasized the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom. “This anniversary marks a major moment in our history—when Britain helped defeat the forces of fascism and protect our democracy,” he said.

Ross Kemp said, ‘This might be our last chance to thank the surviving veterans’.

“Taking part is an opportunity for us all to honour those who sacrificed so much, to reconnect with our neighbours and communities, and to remember the values that underpinned the victory. They matter as much today as they did then.”

Dame Kelly Holmes echoed these sentiments, stating, “Moments like this bring us together as a country and remind us of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. They also give us an opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the victory from the UK and across the Commonwealth.”

‘Moments like this matter,’ Dame Kelly Holmes added.

The 80th-anniversary celebrations will be spearheaded by the Together Coalition, a collaboration of businesses and individuals organizing the Great British Food Festival on 5 May.

The event will kickstart a weekend of festivities, including street parties and picnics, reminiscent of the jubilant celebrations that took place in 1945 when thousands poured into the streets to mark Germany’s surrender.
