UK Scientists Develop Another Vaccine Backed By Government Funding

As experts across the UK continue their hunt and experiments to find the best vaccine for the coronavirus, trials of a possible vaccine begin this week.

On Monday, the government of the UK stated that about 300 people will be immunised with the Covid-19 vaccine which was developed by a researcher at Imperial College London recently.

Healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 70 who will take part in clinical trials will all be given two doses of the vaccine over the coming weeks. There is hope that if there is an effective immune response to the vaccine, tests could then move to 6,000 volunteers.

The Imperial vaccine uses synthetic strands of genetic code based on the genetic code of Sars-CoV-2, the “novel coronavirus” responsible for the pandemic as an alternative to giving people a weakened form of illness.

According to the Imperial College professor leading the development of the vaccine, Robin Shattock, the early vaccines may not stop someone from contracting the virus.

He said: “Is that protection against infection? Is it protection against illness? Is it protection against severe disease? It’s quite possible a vaccine that only protects against severe disease would be very useful.”

The development of the coronavirus vaccine at the Imperial College London was backed by £41m in funding from the government of the UK as well as  £5m from other donations.

This came after a separate vaccine which was developed by Oxford University experts started undergoing human clinical trials.
