Shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds has warned that adopting a “one-size-fits-all approach” to support different sectors of the economy could possibly make unemployment levels “even worse” and a “long-term scarring impact on our economy.”
While speaking to the media, Anneliese Dodds said she had called on the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to consider withdrawing economic support for different sectors at different times to avoid a devastating impact.
“They should either have a varied approach to furlough and the self-employed scheme… or they should provide an alternative, and they haven’t done that,” she said.
“In many cases, we were told there would be different sector deals. We’re yet to see them arriving across a whole range of different affected sectors.
This comes as the country is most concerned with reopening its economy and moving it back to normal after a lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
