U.S. President Donald Trump is set to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as he intensifies efforts to broker peace in Ukraine.
Trump, who has been working behind the scenes on a ceasefire deal, said “a lot of work’s been done over the weekend” to persuade Putin to agree to a temporary halt in fighting.

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed on to Trump’s proposal for a 30-day truce. However, Putin has resisted, insisting that the “root causes” of the conflict must first be addressed—a stance that ignores the fact that Russia initiated the war with its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Territorial Talks: Will Putin Concede Any Ground?
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump hinted that territorial negotiations would be central to his discussions with Putin.

“We will be talking about land,” he stated, referring to regions occupied by Russian forces since the war began. He described the process as “dividing up certain assets,” though details remain unclear.
Putin initially expected to seize Ukraine within days of his invasion in February 2022. Instead, Russia has been locked in a gruelling conflict, suffering over 500,000 casualties. With the war dragging on, the Kremlin may face increasing pressure to negotiate.
Starmer Rallies Allies for Ukraine Security Guarantees
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is working to secure long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Over the weekend, he held a virtual meeting with leaders from 26 nations and representatives from NATO and the EU to discuss commitments to Ukraine’s defence.

While Starmer reported “new commitments” and signalled that planning is moving into an “operational phase,” questions remain over which nations are willing to send troops for a peacekeeping mission. With no ceasefire in place, many leaders hesitate to make firm pledges.
