Tom Holland has opened up about his journey to sobriety, sharing that giving up drinking has been a transformative experience for him.
In an episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the 27-year-old ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ star expressed that quitting alcohol has been “the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Reflecting on his decision, Holland revealed that his sober journey began after a particularly indulgent holiday season last year. Rather than having a sudden realization, he acknowledged that he had a very boozy December like many Brits do during Christmas vacation.
He mentioned his ability to handle alcohol well, which he believes comes from his mom’s side of the family. However, he made the choice to give it up for the month of January.
However, dry January proved to be more challenging than he anticipated. Holland admitted that all he could think about was having a drink, constantly checking the clock and counting down the hours.
His intense cravings started to worry him, leading him to question if he had a deeper issue with alcohol. To challenge himself further, he decided to extend his sobriety journey into February, hoping to prove to himself that he didn’t have a problem.
As Holland continued his alcohol-free period, he faced the pressure of England’s drinking-centric culture. He struggled to be social, feeling limited in his options for socializing and going out.
However, as he approached his birthday the following month, he experienced a turning point. By the time June 1 rolled around, he declared himself the happiest he had ever been, listing various benefits he gained from abstaining from alcohol, such as improved sleep, better problem-solving skills, and enhanced mental clarity.
Reflecting on his journey, Holland questioned why he had been so obsessed with drinking and why he had felt enslaved to it. He also mentioned that his decision had an additional positive impact on his mother, who was inspired to embrace sobriety after witnessing her son thrive without alcohol.
Holland acknowledged that giving up drinking did mean relinquishing one of his beloved pastimes: watching rugby. He explained that the drinking culture associated with rugby had contributed to his decision to distance himself from the community.
However, despite this sacrifice, he expressed no regrets, emphasizing that quitting alcohol has been the most rewarding and fulfilling choice he has made.
Throughout his journey, Holland has had the support of his girlfriend, actress Zendaya, by his side.
