UK government is funding a project which is meant to increase coronavirus tests using bio-detection dogs as they have detected other diseases before.

Researchers across the UK have been making efforts and trials to come up with the most effective way to detect coronavirus. Among suggestions is the use of dogs to sniff out the virus.

Dogs have been used before to detect several diseases like cancers, Parkinson`s disease and malaria.

Innovation minister James Bethell said: “Bio-detection dogs already detect specific cancers and we believe this innovation might provide speedy results as part of our wider testing strategy”.

The UK government contributed £500,000 towards the research. The first trial is expected to be conducted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, along with the charity and Durham University.

This trial will be used to analyze whether the “Covid dogs”- made up of Labradors and cocker spaniels –can detect the virus in humans from odour samples before symptoms appear.

Bio-detection can screen up to 250 people per hour and the new trial will be used to establish whether this could be a new warning measure to detect coronavirus in future.

NHS staff in London hospitals will take part in this phase by collecting samples of breath and body odour from a number of different sources, including used face masks.

About six dogs will be given the samples of odour from coronavirus patients and taught to their smell from that of infected people. The charity said that training could take as little as six to eight weeks.
