The rise of food prices calls for an urgent need to grow your own food. People living in urban areas can be discouraged from growing their vegetables and fruits because of space.

Growing your own food is so much healthier and cheaper. Firstly, you know how and where the food was grown.

Here are basic tips on how to start your own veggie garden:

  • Look for space. Here you can find that small spot of soil in your yard. Your balcony or window sills can also be considered space! So being in an urban area shouldn’t stop you.
  • Watch where the morning sun hits the most, this can also help you with space allocation. Too much sunlight can damage plants.
  • Consider different types of containers to place around your yard. From old shoes to throwaway bathtubs.
  • Determine your soil type and mix with manure according to the type of soil you have.
  • Start planting those seeds now. Remember to leave space between each seed to make room for growth.
  • As your seedlings grow, use a small container to water your plants. A bottle with small holes underneath can work great.
  • Water before sunrise and after sunsets.
