Twitter Verification To Favour Health Experts In A Coronavirus Battle Move

A Twitter rep. said the company is currently partnering with organizations like the World Health Organization to pick out accounts that should be verified.

Twitter said it will loosen the grip on account verification so health experts will find it easy to get verified. The tech company is taking new steps to open up its notoriously opaque verification program so they can help elevate credible accounts that are providing useful  #COVID19 information.

“We are working with global public health authorities to identify experts and have already Verified hundreds of accounts,” Twitter said.

The update follows days after Twitter aggressively blocked a lot of accounts that spread misinformation on social media in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Twitter also promised it was going to start banning tweets spreading fake cures or other inaccurate pseudo-scientific information.

Twitter is opening its verification program for the same reason an often fraught topic for the company, which hardly discuss verification issues publicly. Although several currents and former Twitter executives jokingly reference their inability to verify users in their bios.

In recent tweets, the company claimed it’s verified “hundreds” of accounts, and explained practical steps academics and others who work for public health organizations or academic institutions can take in order for them to get their accounts verified.

“We are prioritizing Verification for Twitter accounts that have an email address associated with an authoritative organization or institution,” the company wrote. “Please also ensure your Twitter bio references (and links to) the institution you are associated with, and that the page you link to includes a reference back to your Twitter account.”

Twitter may also open up a public-facing form that will allow health experts to directly request verification from Twitter, following Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour. “We’ll likely share a link to an intake form soon for experts to fill out to request verification too– just working on way to better separate likely noise from the signal,” he said.

If Twitter makes a publicly-accessible verification request form available, it’ll be the first time that is happening since it officially “paused” verification exercise in 2017 following its widely criticized verifying program for favouring only white nationalists.
