Sir Bob Geldof has responded to Ed Sheeran’s recent remarks about his voice being featured on the 2024 version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, following the announcement of the “ultimate mix” to mark the 40th anniversary of Band Aid.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Sir Bob Geldof had blended vocals from previous versions of the iconic charity single, featuring contributions from artists including Sheeran, who was part of Band Aid 30 in 2014.

However, Sheeran expressed dissatisfaction, claiming he hadn’t been asked permission to use his vocals, and stated that he would have “respectfully declined” if asked.

In a social media post, the ‘Lego House’ singer explained that his perspective on Band Aid had evolved over the years.

The Boomtown Rats frontman emphasised the real-world impact of the charity’s work in areas such as education and healthcare, noting the staggering numbers of hungry people worldwide—300 million of whom are in Africa.

“No abstract theory, no matter how sincerely held, should impede or distract from that concrete real-world reality,” he said.

The track will premiere on breakfast radio on November 27th before being released for sale.

Sir Bob Geldof’s comments highlight the ongoing debate about the role of charity initiatives like Band Aid in addressing global issues. Supporters and critics alike continue to voice their opinions on the best approach to helping those in need.
