Meghan Markle and Prince Harry jetted out of Canada for a fresh beginning in Los Angeles before the borders were shut down amid the coronavirus outbreak. A statement rather regarded as “intending to cause provocation” claimed they left Canada because they did not want to pay ‘tax’ in two countries.
Meanwhile, The Sun news said, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry moved to Hollywood as a result of having more opportunities to cut down on cost. Meghan Markle is a US citizen, she would be required to pay tax in Canada and the U.S. if she reside in Canada.
An undisclosed source told the newsmen, “Initially Harry and Meghan wanted to be based in a Commonwealth country — Canada — and earn their own money while still performing some royal duties. But their plan very quickly fell apart.
“They were told getting work visas in Canada would be difficult and because Meghan remains a US citizen, so is taxed on her worldwide income, she would end up paying in the US and Canada.
“Then the Canadian government made it clear they would not contribute to their security costs so it made much more sense to live in Hollywood and only pay US tax.”
What this means is that all self-employed revenue that could be derived from social media or any other merchandising would have to be reported.
And the U.S. Internal Revenue Service would also have to be notified of any foreign bank accounts that the royals operate.
News making rounds are suggesting that the royal couple will seek to make millions of pounds from their brand across the pond to stay financially up to date.
“The borders were closing and flights were stopping. They had to get out.
“But this move was planned for some time. They realised Canada would not work out for various reasons and they want to be based in the Los Angeles area.
“They have a big support network there. It’s where their new team of Hollywood agents and PRs and business managers are based.
“Meghan Markle has lots of friends there and, of course, her mum Doria.”
Social media users are still bordered with thought over who will pay for the Sussexes’ private security after the UK and Canada initial paid for them and would no longer be doing so.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been in collaboration with London’s Metropolitan Police on security for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry “intermittently” since they jetted to Canada.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will lose support for their security which is estimated to cost about £7.6 million and is publicly funded by the end of this month when they will no longer be considered as senior members of the British royal family.
Royal photographer Arthur Edwards noted: “their move was not a surprise as their isolated existence on Vancouver Island was never going to work”.
Even though Canada is in the Commonwealth, Mr Edwards never expected the Duke and Duchess to stay there permanently.
He said, “They tried palace life in Britain but it didn’t work out. So they have switched from Harry’s home town to Meghan’s.
“In a way, it’s exchanging one goldfish bowl for another but it’s a city where Meghan has deep personal and professional connections.
“In LA they’ll be close to Meghan’s mum Doria – her only family member at her wedding to Harry – who will love having Archie so close.”
Meghan Markle grew up in Los Angeles with her father Thomas Markle who worked as a television director and director of photography. She has also maintained her team of agents and PRs in LA.
Los Angeles may really be more ideal for the royals as most of Meghan’s A-list friends like Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres live there.
