Some police officers came under attack and suffered minor injuries while responding to an assault in Hackney, East London yesterday.
The members of the public recorded a video of an attack on the two officers which is now circulating on social media. The video footage shows a man pressing a uniformed police officer to the ground, while another appeared to be brandishing a baseball bat.
The female police officer who was with him was pushed hard while she was screaming at the group to get back. Several others who were part of the group gathered around the two police officers swearing and recording on their phones. People who were passing by began to take pictures and selfies as the officer and the suspect grappled.
In a statement, the Met Police said: “As an officer attempted to speak with those involved, one of the men resisted and a struggle ensued. A number of other people became involved whilst the officer was on the ground.”
The home secretary and the Police Federation damned the assault. Priti Patel said that the attack was “sickening, shocking and disgraceful” while the federation said: “We are not the society`s punchbags.”
Superintendent Martin Rolston said: “This incident, which was captured on someone’s mobile phone, is truly shocking. My officers went to the assistance of a member of the public – who asked for their help – after stating that they had been assaulted.
“What happened next is a reminder of the risks our officers take whilst going about their duties. It is fortunate that their injuries are not more serious. There is no place for this level of violence on our streets.
Two men aged 20 and 38, who were alleged of assaulting the police have been arrested and detained in east London police station.
