This is the time to really appreciate the potential the internet has when it comes to human connection. The world is so much smaller than we think.

The isolation has deprived many of us of a sense of community and online communities may be the answer. Isolation is hard, online communities are an essential safe space.

Whether it is from boredom, for work or just to stay in touch with the world. Many of us have gravitated towards the virtual space more so than most would have had time.

With the touch of a button, you can touch the life on an individual from across the world. Whether you want to mock that individual or be kind to them is really up to you.

There have been many cases where the internet has given way to bullying and toxic online behaviour. What we tend to forget is that the same space can be used for the opposite effects.

Now is the time to start building online communities that can nurture our connections with the world instead of putting each other down.

There are many communities that have formed online in order to support and inspire each other. Here is a list of online communities that you can join to keep you inspired this shutdown:

  • Cafemom.com is an online community for moms and parents alike. If you are a dad, then Cafedad.com may be more of your style!
  • AARP is a community dedicated to seniors. Senior citizens become marginalised the older they get. This group exists for them to make connections and talk about their experiences.
  • Domestic Abuse Survivors on Facebook is a page dedicated to sharing stories of women who have survived abuse. This may, of course, be a trigger for some women so do tread carefully.
  • GirlBoss is a community dedicated to supporting young women who want to build their own businesses. With advice from other women and their experiences. You are sure to learn a thin two.

If you cannot find a community that you feel caters to what you have in mind, why not start your own? You would be surprised by the number of people who will relate to stories you felt only unique to you.
