Police Calls On Priti Patel To Ban All Protest During Crisis In England

Police Federation chairman John Apter noted that the right to protest is important but also acknowledged that "we are not in normal times," while adding that officers and the public are facing an "avoidable risk".

Following the recent protest across the UK which also saw the police and some protesters clash leaving some officers injured, the officers are calling for the home secretary Priti Patel to slam ban all protests in England and Wales while the coronavirus pandemic still remains a threat.

Police Federation chairman John Apter noted that the right to protest is important but also acknowledged that “we are not in normal times,” while adding that officers and the public are facing an “avoidable risk”.

This comes after more than 100 people were arrested in the second weekend of the Black Lives Matter protest which was sparked by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer placed his kneel on his neck for 9 minutes in Minneapolis and counter-protests involving far-right activists.

The UK government has been warning protesters that beating the social distancing rules could lead to a fresh spike in cases of the coronavirus and Home Secretary Priti Patel is due to give a statement in the House of Commons later.
