There is rising concern for the safety of vulnerable children during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly as support systems like teachers and social workers have limited contact.

Many cases of child abuse may be going unreported during lockdown ‘because people don’t know where to go for help’.  Councils have warned that the impact of the pandemic on some children will be ‘far-reaching’.

A survey made by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) found that 26 per cent of adults are not confident they would know where to seek help if they thought a child or young person was being abused or neglected.

The head of the child helpline, Kam Thandi, said: “It is terrible to think that cases of child abuse and neglect may be going unreported because people don`t know where to go for help and advice.”

She encouraged anyone anxious about the well being of a child to contact the helpline, amid warnings of rise in domestic violence.

A report from the Local Government Association (LGA) has revealed that councils are seeing a 50 per cent decline in social care referrals of children may be at risk.

As a result, the NSPCC has launched a nationwide campaign, backed by people who`ve experienced abuse and £1.6 million of Government funding, to ensure more people know they can contact the NSPCC Helpline if they`re worries a child is unsafe.
