The members of parliament have criticised British Airways of “taking advantage” of the coronavirus crisis by making 12,000 employees redundant.

The Transport Select Committee slammed British Airways saying that it has made a “calculated attempt to take advantage” of the pandemic by making thousands of employees jobless.

The UK MPs described the airline`s treatment of staff during the coronavirus pandemic as “a national disgrace”. They argued that the airline`s actions fell “well below the standards we would expect from an employer”.

A number of aviation companies across the world, including Ryanair, easyJet and Virgin Atlantic, have been cutting jobs because of the negative impact of the crisis.

British Airways said that it has been making all efforts to keep “the maximum number of jobs”. The airline came up with major restructuring strategies, which may see up to 12,000 employees redundant and changes to the terms and conditions of those remaining.

In a statement, BA said: “We find ourselves in the deepest crisis ever faced by the airline industry – a crisis not of our making but one which we must address.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that British Airways can survive and sustain the maximum number of jobs consistent with the new reality of a changed airline industry in a severely weakened global economy.”

BA also warned unions that if they could not come to an agreement with the proposals it would push through the issue by giving notice to staff and offering them new contracts. This infuriated the unions.

The Transport Committee revealed the government had assisted the airline as of 14 May with almost 35m for furloughing 22,000 staff members. The MPs also stated that at the end of last year, the airline recorded profits after tax of 1.1bn and cash reserves of 2.6bn.
