When questioned by Kate Blackwell KC, Gove disputed the notion that Brexit planning diverted resources and argued that it actually improved the Covid response.

He emphasized that the preparations for EU exit provided valuable training and crisis management skills, which were instrumental in enhancing pandemic preparedness.

While acknowledging that specific measures might have further strengthened the country’s ability to tackle the pandemic, Gove highlighted that there were no explicit recommendations to focus government efforts on the exact type of crisis that Covid would become, apart from a few scholarly articles.

Gove’s stance aligns with the earlier testimony of former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who also contended that Brexit preparations played a crucial role in preventing shortages of intensive care drugs during the peak of the pandemic.
