Meghan Markle has reacted following a public apology issued on GB News after a presenter repeated false claims about the Duchess of Sussex’s mother, Doria Ragland.
The controversy emerged earlier this month during a discussion about Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle. During the broadcast, GB News contributor Carole Malone incorrectly claimed that Meghan’s father had “brought her up” and “paid for her school fees” while alleging that Ms Ragland had been in prison.
More than a week later, Malone addressed the issue on air, acknowledging that the statements were untrue and based on misinformation she had encountered online.

She said, “I believed this to be the case based on what I now understand to be misinformation I had seen online. I was questioned about the validity of this claim during the broadcast, and I repeated this belief, which I now understand to be false.

“This was a genuine error. I accept what I have now been told on behalf of Ms Ragland that she raised her daughter, and that she has never been in prison or jail. I apologise sincerely to Ms Ragland and her family for any pain my comments may have caused, and I am happy to set the record straight.”
GB News apology and programme removal
Following the on-air apology, commentators noted that the programme containing Malone’s statement had already been removed from GB News’ YouTube channel, where much of the broadcaster’s output is made available for streaming.
The removal prompted further scrutiny, particularly as the apology itself appeared to have a limited public lifespan online.
Meghan Markle’s response through representatives
In response, a representative for Meghan Markle issued a statement to People magazine, criticising the handling of the situation by the broadcaster.

“Broadcasters have a responsibility to inform, not inflame,” the spokesperson said. “This lie was conclusively debunked more than two years ago, yet it continues to be recycled by irresponsible commentators, causing recurring harm.
“Ms Ragland proudly raised her daughter and has never been in prison. GB News did not apologise voluntarily, but only to escape a defamation lawsuit – and it speaks volumes that GB News removed any trace of that apology within 24 hours of making it.”
Ongoing criticism of media treatment
Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, have repeatedly spoken about what they describe as unfair and damaging coverage in the British media.
They have previously highlighted commentary they believe has been rooted in racism, particularly during Meghan’s time as a working member of the Royal Family.
