Lawyers In the UK Threaten To Take Legal Action Against The Government

Lawyers across the country have urged the government of the UK to review its air quality strategy amid the coronavirus crisis.

Lawyers across the country have urged the government of the UK to review its air quality strategy amid the coronavirus crisis.

According to the lawyers, there is a constant increase in evidence of a link between air pollution and the effect of the coronavirus, hence the government has a legal obligation to reconsider its air quality strategy.

A letter addressed to the ministers asserts that if the government disdained the order to make a review, it will be in breach of UK law, the precautionary principle, as well as the European convention on human rights.

In the UK estimates have revealed that dirty air contributes to nearly 40,000 early deaths a year and there is increasing evidence that it is linked to the rising coronavirus infection rates and death rates.

Lawyers acting for Mums for Lungs and the Good Law Project, stated that this potential threat to life means that the government must take action even though the evidence is not yet conclusive.

The director of the Good Law Project, Jolyon Maugham, said: “When there is a risk of harm to human life, the government must take measures to alleviate that risk. With evidence piling up that links dirty air with cases of Covid-19, it is the government’s legal duty to conduct an urgent review. The government says they are listening to science. They must prove it.”

The UK lawyers have urged Eustice to commit to a review by 23 June and publish it within three months. Mums for Lungs and the Good Law Project have threatened to take further legal action if the government declines.
