Days after the tragic loss of the late singer-songwriter CoCo Lee to suicide, her estranged husband is breaking his silence along with his family.
Bruce Rockowitz, who had been married to Lee since 2011, along with Lee’s stepdaughters Rachel and Sarah, as well as her older sisters Carol and Nancy, released a public obituary in memory of the pop star.
The Canadian businessman penned a heartfelt note, announcing Lee’s passing at the age of 48 after a prolonged battle with depression. He emphasized that she was surrounded by the entire family at the time.
Translated from Chinese, the obituary described Lee as a beautiful, warm, and kind person. It highlighted her talent as a singer, composer, and mentor to younger artists. She was cherished as a beloved wife, a sweet friend, and a dear family member who radiated enthusiasm, dedication, and authenticity, bringing light to everyone around her.
The tribute expressed the deep sense of loss felt by all those whose lives were touched by Lee and stated that her influence would continue to shine. Details about her funeral would be announced later.
Multiple sources, including Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, reported that Lee and Rockowitz were separated at the time of her death. Lee’s sister Nancy revealed that she had faced a challenging year, battling various health issues, including breast cancer, for which she underwent surgery.
A close friend and collaborator, Jae Chong, confirmed Lee’s cancer diagnosis in an Instagram post, describing her as a courageous fighter.
Lee had been hospitalized on July 2 after a suicide attempt and remained in a coma until her passing, as shared by her sisters Carol and Nancy through a social media post.
While Lee initially rose to fame as a Mandopop singer, she achieved international recognition in the United States. Her song “A Love Before Time” from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2001 Academy Awards, and she performed it live at the ceremony.
Actress Michelle Yeoh, one of the stars of the movie, expressed her deep sorrow on Instagram, recognizing Lee as a shining star and the first Chinese performer at the Oscars.
The loss of CoCo Lee has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and fans, who will always remember her beautiful voice and incredible talent. Heartfelt condolences were extended to Lee’s family and all those who cherished her. May she rest in peace.
