Jeremy Hunt Urges UK To “Remain Vigilant” After Moscow Mass Shooting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that 11 individuals were detained after the attack, alleging that they were attempting to cross the border into Ukraine. However, he did not mention the Islamic State in his speech.

Jeremy Hunt, the UK Chancellor, has called for the country to “remain vigilant” following the mass shooting in Moscow. The Kremlin has reported that 133 people were killed and 107 others injured in the massacre on Friday.

While the militant Islamist group, the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), has claimed responsibility, Russia is investigating the possibility of Ukrainian involvement, a claim vehemently denied by Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that 11 individuals were detained after the attack, alleging that they were attempting to cross the border into Ukraine. However, he did not mention the Islamic State in his speech.

The United States has expressed support for Ukraine, stating that there was “no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever” and that the IS affiliate bears sole responsibility for the attack. It is important to note that Russia intervened against the Islamic State in 2015 during Syria’s civil war.

In an interview with Sky News host Trevor Phillips, Jeremy Hunt was asked about the level of trust that should be placed in the Russian accounts of the incident.

Hunt expressed little confidence in anything the Russian government says, citing their history of creating a smokescreen of propaganda to defend their invasion of Ukraine. However, he acknowledged the tragedy of innocent lives lost and the need to remain cautious.

Hunt emphasized that while the success of UK intelligence agencies in foiling terrorist threats in recent years should be acknowledged, vigilance is crucial. He highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the Islamic State’s actions and the need to be prepared for any potential attacks.

Regarding the possibility of increasing the UK’s threat level from substantial, Hunt stated that this decision is made independently by British intelligence chiefs.

However, he acknowledged that they would closely examine the events in Moscow and their potential implications for the UK.
