Iran’s air defence commander has said his forces have intercepted and destroyed more than 160 drones, alongside dozens of cruise missiles, amid heightened military tensions.
Brigadier General Alireza Elhami also claimed that several advanced fighter jets had been shot down, although there has been no independent confirmation of these assertions.
The United States has not confirmed reports that an F-15 fighter jet crash over Iran was the result of hostile action by Islamic forces.
Iran Military Claims Advanced Defence Capabilities Against Modern Threats
In remarks carried by the IRNA news agency and reported by Al Jazeera, Elhami said Iranian forces were prepared to ambush “enemy fighter jets and drones”.
He added that operations would rely on “modern indigenous methods and equipment” designed to counter advanced aerial threats, including fifth-generation aircraft and sophisticated unmanned systems.
The Islamic state has invested heavily in domestically developed defence technologies in recent years, particularly in response to sanctions limiting access to foreign military hardware.
No Independent Verification Of Downed Fighter Jet Reports
Despite the claims, there has been no independent verification that Iranian forces have successfully shot down multiple fighter jets.
Fifth-generation fighter aircraft are widely regarded as the most advanced in operation, equipped with stealth capabilities intended to evade radar detection and sophisticated defence systems.

The F-15, however, does not fall into this category, as it predates the latest generation of stealth-focused aircraft.
