Choudhary, aged 56, a renowned preacher, was apprehended during a dawn raid in East London, while 28-year-old Canadian national Hussain was detained at Heathrow Airport.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the two men, who were arrested last week on suspicion of terrorism offenses, have now been formally charged. The arrests were made under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Choudhary faces charges of “membership of a proscribed organization, addressing meetings to encourage support for a proscribed organization, and directing a terrorist organization”.
On the other hand, Hussain has been charged solely with membership of a proscribed organization.
These charges are about their alleged involvement with Al-Muhajiroun, a group that was banned by the British Government in 2005.
Both individuals appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today and have been remanded in custody. They are scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on August 4th.
