Halle Berry Pulls Out Of Transgender Film Role After Online Backlash

Halle Berry has turned down the opportunity to portray a transgender man in a prospective film after receiving online backlash for repeatedly misgendering the character.

Halle Berry has turned down the opportunity to portray a transgender man in a prospective film after receiving online backlash for repeatedly misgendering the character.

On July 7th on Twitter, Halle Berry took the opportunity to apologize for her ‘remarks’ and admitted that she should have not ‘considered this role’ for the film in the first place. Halle said that “as a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories.”

“I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and I will continue to listen, educate, and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera,” Halle concluded.

In the Instagram Live chat uploaded Friday, Halle revealed to host Christin Brown that she was being considered for “a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man.”

The very idea that a trans man is a “female” role demonstrates that Halle Berry has some misunderstood concepts about the trans community. Trans men are men and trans women are women, without making any physical alterations to their bodies.

Although she insisted that she wants to ‘experience that world’ and ‘understand that world,’ Halle still ends up misgendering the potential role.

Transgender Activist, Serena Daniari, criticized Halle Berry online for incorrectly categorizing the transgender male character’s story as a ‘female’ one. Serena posted a few remarks on Twitter-

Serena Daniara ends her rant at Halle by saying that, “The convo about cis people playing trans characters has been played out so many times, it is banal at this point. Get it the **** together Hollywood. From Matt Bomer to Jeffrey Tambor, it is not a good look! We need more trans people behind the camera to make these decisions.”

Though many fans of Halle Berry stuck up for saying that she does not need to apologize, that she is first and foremost an actor and can play any role she wants to, though it is clear that not everyone feels this way.

It’s a tough situation, but I think the right call has been made.
