Greens Surge Into Second Place After By-Election Victory, New YouGov Poll Shows

The momentum follows last Thursday’s by-election upset, where Green candidate Hannah Spencer secured victory and pushed Labour into third place in what had long been considered one of its safest constituencies.

The Green Party has moved into second place nationwide following its dramatic by-election success in Gorton and Denton, according to fresh polling data.

A new survey conducted by YouGov for Sky News and The Times places the Greens on 21%, marking a four-point rise over the past week. The pollster said this represents the highest level of support it has ever recorded for the party.

The results leave the Zack Polanski party just two points behind Reform UK on 23%, while the Labour Party has slipped to third place on 16%, down two points.

Support for the Conservative Party also stands at 16% after a two-point drop, while the Liberal Democrats remain unchanged at 14%.

A YouGov spokesman said: “This is the highest we’ve had the Greens and the first time we’ve had them in second. It is also the lowest we have had Labour.

“In terms of how meaningful this is, it is obviously likely driven to a significant extent by the publicity from the Denton and Gorton by-election, as well as any impact it has from the Greens appearing a more viable option and less of a wasted vote.

“It remains to be seen to what extent it sticks, or whether it fades again as the immediate publicity boost recedes.”

A Party source said: “We are coming for Reform and on the path to replacing Labour.

“Voters have been let down time and time again by high bills, toxic rhetoric on migration and failure to make real change to improve people’s lives.

“Gorton and Denton showed that if people vote Green, they can get Green. Starmer can smear us as much as he wants but the voters want change and increasingly see the Greens as party to break the failed status quo.”

The reference to “Starmer” relates to Labour leader Keir Starmer.

In another boost for the party, membership has now surpassed 200,000 — triple the figure recorded when Zack Polanski was elected leader last September.
