Tragedy struck in Japan as a collision between a passenger plane and a coastguard aircraft resulted in the loss of five lives and left a pilot seriously injured.
The incident occurred at Tokyo’s Haneda airport when a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 collided with the coastguard aircraft MA722. The coastguard aircraft was on its way to deliver aid to the victims of the recent New Year’s Day earthquake, which has claimed the lives of at least 48 people.
The collision was captured on live footage by public broadcaster NHK, showing the Airbus A350 engulfed in flames as it skidded down the tarmac at approximately 6 pm.
Despite the efforts of rescue crews, the fire consumed the aircraft, leading to a devastating outcome. Thankfully, all 379 passengers, including eight children, and 12 crew members managed to escape unharmed.
Footage and images shared on social media depicted the chaotic scene inside the smoke-filled cabin, with passengers shouting and making their way towards the evacuation slide on the tarmac. It was a harrowing experience for those onboard, but their swift evacuation ensured their safety.
