Ellen DeGeneres Backlash After Insensitive Quarantine Comments

TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has received some serious backlash following comments she made when she compared her quarantine in her mansion to “being in jail”.

Her comments come at a time that the USA is recording the highest COVID-19 infections in the world, just short of half a million and if the death rate remains the way it is now, they could overtake Italy within the week with the highest number of COVID-19 related deaths.

Although meaning no harm, DeGeneres’ comments were not taken likely by social media users who criticized the TV talk show hos of being insensitive to the plight of inmates as the number of COVID-19 infected prisoners increases across the USA.

Ellen Degeneres, who recorded the segment from her multi-million dollar home, went on to say that “One thing that I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people – this is like being in jail, is what it is,” going on to add  “It’s mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.”.

Although the rhetoric was said in fun, some viewers took offence to the statement stating that the comedian was being insensitive to the plight of those in prison.

One viewer went on to write the following message:

“Sitting inside her fifteen million dollar mansion complaining and comparing it to a prison, very tone deaf ellen.”

another viewer added: “Hey @TheEllenShow, prisoners across this country are trapped in 24-hour quarantine in cells that are probably about the size of one of your showers & others are sleeping 3 feet away from sick inmates. And they’re dying. You aren’t experiencing anything close to prison.”

The segment was originally aired on her official YouTube channel but was taken down and edited, with the offending comments removed before being republished on Wednesday.

The backlash is just an example of the growing frustration being felt as almost a quarter of the world’s population finds itself under COVID-19 lockdown.

While some are locked away in unbearable conditions, sometimes the thought that others are riding out these tough times in such luxurious conditions as shown in Ellen’s video can lead to understandable frustration and resentment.
