US President Donald Trump has delayed previously threatened military action against Iran, announcing a temporary halt to strikes targeting the country’s energy infrastructure.
The decision follows what Trump described as “very good and productive conversations” between Washington and Tehran, aimed at achieving a “complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East”.
The pause comes just days after heightened tensions, when Trump warned Iran it had 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe military retaliation, including threats to “obliterate” its power plants.
US-Iran Talks Lead To Temporary Halt In Military Action
In a statement, Trump confirmed he had instructed officials to delay any immediate escalation, saying the outcome would depend on the progress of ongoing negotiations.
“I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period”, he said, adding that the move was contingent on the success of continued discussions.
The announcement signals a shift in tone after a weekend marked by sharp rhetoric and warnings of imminent conflict.
Strait Of Hormuz Tensions And Regional Escalation
The standoff intensified after Iran was given a deadline to act on access to the crucial oil shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy supplies.
The ultimatum followed reports that two Iranian missiles struck southern Israel, injuring more than 100 people on Sunday, further escalating fears of a broader regional confrontation.
Iran had also issued its own warning, threatening to “completely destroy” key military sites across the region if tensions continued to rise.
