Seven members of the medical team responsible for Diego Maradona’s care in his final days are facing trial for homicide in Buenos Aires. The legendary footballer, who died of a heart attack in November 2020, was recovering at home from brain surgery when he passed away.
Prosecutors argue that negligence played a critical role in Maradona’s death, asserting that the healthcare professionals failed to provide proper care. The defendants—among them his brain surgeon, psychiatrist, and nursing staff—deny any wrongdoing but could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Explosive Evidence Reveals Alleged Medical Negligence

A 2021 medical board report concluded that Maradona’s medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient, and reckless manner.” The findings questioned why the football legend was discharged so soon after surgery and criticized the lack of adequate monitoring at his home.
According to the report, Diego Maradona did not receive necessary heart and lab tests in the two weeks leading up to his death. Prosecutors have gathered more than 120,000 messages and audio recordings from private conversations between those involved in his care, which could prove pivotal in the case.

The accused include Diego Maradona’s doctor, neurologist Leopoldo Luque, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who prescribed his medications. Other defendants include an addiction specialist, a home care doctor, and members of the nursing staff.

One nurse, Gisela Dahiana Madrid, has requested a separate jury trial at a later date. Meanwhile, the defense argues that Maradona’s death was sudden and inevitable, commissioning its forensic study to counter the prosecution’s claims.
