In the early hours of Thursday, a Scottish lorry driver was arrested at the UK-France border following the discovery of drugs in his cargo.

The police seized about 150kg of cannabis worth approximately £1.5 million and arrested a 43-year-old man from Motherwell at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Coquelles, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

An amount of £2,000 cash which had been concealed in the cargo together with the cannabis was also found by the Border Force officers.

In a statement, the NCA Scotland branch operations manager John McGowan said: “This is a significant drug seizure involving NCA teams in Scotland and England working together with partners including Border Force and Police Scotland.”

The minister for immigration compliance and the courts, Chris Philp added: “This is just one example of the crucial work that Border Force officers do every day to help keep the UK safe. Detections of harmful drugs and illicit cash such as this are testament to their dedication and expertise.”

In the UK, cannabis is categorized as a Class B drug and its medicinal use was legalized in 2018, although it is markedly difficult to access.
