Hollywood’s on-again, off-again golden couple, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, once dazzled the world with their rekindled romance, proving that second chances can sometimes work—until they don’t.
The two first fell in love in the early 2000s, a whirlwind romance that ended in a postponed wedding and a heartbreaking split.
But love, or perhaps fate, had other plans when they found their way back to each other two decades later, culminating in an intimate Las Vegas wedding in 2022. Unfortunately, the honeymoon phase didn’t last, as their high-profile love affair came crashing down just two years later.
Now, months after their divorce was finalized, Affleck is looking back with brutal honesty, shedding light on why their love story may have been doomed from the start.
“You Don’t Marry a Ship’s Captain and Then Hate the Water”
In a candid new interview with GQ, Affleck got real about the struggles of being part of a power couple constantly under the public’s microscope.

The Oscar-winning actor, known for his brooding charm, addressed a moment in Lopez’s 2024 documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, where he appeared visibly uneasy about being filmed in their day-to-day lives.
“There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them,” Affleck admitted. “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers.”

The actor went on to use a fitting metaphor for their relationship dynamic: “You don’t marry a ship’s captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.”

But before fans jump to conclusions, Affleck was quick to shut down any speculation that their different approaches to fame were the ultimate downfall of their marriage.
“And I think it’s important to say that wasn’t the cause of some major fracture. It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.’”
J.Lo Speaks Out: “It’s Been a Tough Year”
While Affleck remains reflective, Lopez hasn’t shied away from addressing her emotions either. In an interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, the chart-topping singer opened up about how the past year has tested her resilience.

Though she didn’t dwell on the details of her split from Affleck, it was clear that their love story’s final chapter wasn’t an easy one to write.
For now, both stars seem to be moving forward, each finding their own way to heal under the ever-watchful eye of Hollywood. And as the world watches, one thing remains certain: when it comes to Bennifer, the drama is never truly over.
