A heated exchange erupted on BBC Question Time after a Labour minister dismissed Reform as a “retirement home for failed Tories” during a debate on housing targets.

The clash unfolded as former Conservative MP Nadine Dorries, who defected to Reform last September, discussed soaring house prices in Bristol. Dorries, once culture secretary and a close ally of Boris Johnson, previously declared the Conservative Party “dead” when she switched allegiances.

During the discussion, Dorries conceded that the Conservatives had fallen short on housing delivery while in government and predicted Labour would also miss its pledge to build 1.5 million new homes.

Luke Pollard’s ‘Retirement Home’ Remark Sparks Audience Reaction

Dorries, now a Daily Mail columnist, argued that the core issue lies with Britain’s dominant political forces.

“The two main parties cannot lead the country,” she said. “That’s why I went to Reform.

“It’s time for a party that is going to be absolutely radical, that is going to bring forward change, that is going to change this, introduce growth, and change this housing.”

Responding directly, Defence minister Luke Pollard said: “I don’t think you can have a new party when you’re just a retirement home for failed Tories.”

His comment drew loud applause and laughter from the studio audience. Pollard continued: “That’s not a new party Nadine, it’s not.”

Dorries pushed back, replying: “You can’t make that accusation without me coming back. Reform is the party of hundreds and thousands.

“That’s the difference between me and you. We’re a proper grassroots party of hundreds of thousands!”

Reform UK Defections: Former Conservative MPs Join Nigel Farage’s Party

Reform currently has eight MPs in Parliament. Each of them, including party leader Nigel Farage, previously belonged to the Conservative Party.

So far, 27 former Tory MPs have defected to the right-wing party. Among them are former home secretary Suella Braverman and former frontbencher Robert Jenrick.

Data from Best for Britain’s tracker indicates that Tory defections to Reform rose by 462% in 2025 compared with 2024. The organisation also reports that 81 serving Reform councillors previously held office as Conservatives.

The exchange on Question Time underlines mounting political tensions as parties battle over housing policy and voter loyalty ahead of future elections.
