Movie fanatics will have to wait a while longer as ‘Avatar 2’, ‘Mulan’, and many other Disney films have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has effected many movie release dates, not only current ones but looking into the future as well. Though this is disheartening news we can look forward to many great films to be released over the next couple of years.

‘Avatar 2’ had already been shifted around on the calendar several times and now it has been pushed back by yet another year from December 2021 to December 2022.

The director/architect of the Avatar franchise James Cameron responded to ‘Avatar 2’ being  delayed on social media, posting a statement that reads: “Due to Covid-19, we were forced into an unexpected lengthy delay in starting the live action filming we are currently doing in New Zealand.”

“What most of you likely do not know is that the pandemic is still preventing us from being allowed to recommence most of our virtual production work on stages in Los Angeles. That work is just as critical to the films as the live action work.” – James added.

James went on to say: “Prior to the COVID-19, everything was on track to bring you the first sequel in December of 2021. Unfortunately, due to the impact that the pandemic has had out our schedule it is no longer possible for us to make that date.”

“There is no one more disappointed about this delay than me. But I am buoyed by the incredible performances of our cast and the extraordinary work that Weta Digital is doing bringing the world of Pandora and the characters of the film to life.” – James added.

James Cameron also added in his statement shared on the official Avatar Instagram page that he’s “thankful for the support” he and his team have been receiving from Disney Studios, as well as being grateful for the fans’ support after all these years. He promises that they “will deliver.” –

With ‘Avatar 2’ being pushed to December 16th, 2022, the other three Avatar sequels have also been further delayed. This also means that it’ll have been nearly 20 years since the first movie came out.

The delay of ‘Avatar 2’ was followed by many other Disney release date changing. This included the ‘Mulan’ movie which already had been postponed twice, now the ‘Mulan’ movie is postponed indefinitely, and the next three ‘Star Wars’ movies are all being pushed back as well. These are just a few of the movies that have had their release dates rearranged.

The next Disney-affiliated movie scheduled to come out in theaters this year is Marvel Studios’ Black Widow in November, which may also end up changing.

A Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said in a statement: “Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis.”

Disney has had to reshuffle its movie release calendar to work around the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but it’s not just Dinsey films that have been postponed, many other films not associated with Disney have also been delayed due to COVID-19.

It appears the summer film calendar is collapsing, but we will still have a lot to look forward to.
