An Open Letter On Self-Reflection As We Look Back On Life

Look at your darkness in the eye, do not flinch away. Embrace yourself as a whole. Put your arms around yourself and send some love. Let that love over-flow out of you. You are truly phenomenal. Yes, you.

The following is an open letter to everyone feeling a bit glum being stuck at home under lockdown. Use this time for some self-reflection into your life, appreciating where you are and what you had to go through to get here as you look forward to what lies ahead.

Dear me, I am so proud of you. When I look at the bigger picture, I cannot believe that you are here. Remember when you were young and wondering what the world had in store for you?

How you thought you could be ready for it? Who you thought you were? You thought you had it all figured out, didn’t you? I am smiling as I write this.

I’m starting to wonder which version of me this letter is for…young and naive me? Older and still naive me? Or my future self? Well, whatever version of me will get to see this, take a moment and pet yourself in the back. Go inside yourself and see the immensity of yourself.

Look at your darkness in the eye, do not flinch away. Embrace yourself as a whole. Put your arms around yourself and send some love. Let that love over-flow out of you. You are truly phenomenal. Yes, you!

It’s so easy to forget your own greatness. It’s so easy to look at problems and forget to look at yourself as a whole. Do not do that, you are not a mere consequence of events. You are whole, from the day that you are born.

Remember that time you wanted a cellphone really bad? You finally got it and you were excited, it was perfect. Oh, the things you could do with a phone.

You went to school with it, you saw other children’s phones in comparison with yours. Your phone became a phone amongst others, the excitement faded and what joy it had given you lessened. You wanted a better phone, like the other kids. That is what would make you happy. But how true is that?

How much wanting will it take to realise that you were always whole? You could be happy, and you deserve to be happy even without having what you think will make you happy.

So after reading this as you one day will. No matter which part of you this letter speaks to, I hope you love yourself. I hope this makes you smile. I hope that your heart feels lighter. You are not so bad, even with the bad. You are phenomenal. Happy Birthday to you.

So take this time stuck at home under lockdown as a break from the usual hectic hustle and bustle of day to day life. Take the opportunity for self-reflection on your life goals and ambitions. Rather than let the lockdown get you down, use it as a chance to better know yourself
