If you missed out on the opportunity to purchase the new Echo Show 5 during Prime Day, you’re in luck. The compact smart display is now available for just $50.
While Prime members enjoyed a $5 discount during the sales event, this $40 reduction is open to everyone. It’s the second-lowest price since the display was launched in May.
The Kids’ version of the display is also on sale for $60, which is $10 more than its Prime Day price.
Although we haven’t reviewed this third-generation Echo Show 5, it appears to be an incremental update from its predecessor, which was highly recommended in our best smart displays guide.
This new version is perfect as a smart alarm clock, with its 5.5-inch panel being a more suitable size for a bedside table compared to the larger Echo Show models.
The ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness in the dark, and a tap-to-snooze feature allows for a few extra minutes of rest with a simple touch on the top of the device.
As an Echo device, it can also stream music, provide weather information, control smart home devices, and perform other tasks through Alexa.
While privacy concerns are understandable, this device offers a physical camera shutter and a microphone mute button.
The new Echo Show 5 features slight improvements in the processor and speaker system, although it still won’t match the speed or sound quality of the Echo Show 8, which is our top recommendation for those seeking an Alexa smart display.
The 8-inch display is currently priced at $75, $15 more than its Prime Day offer.
Moreover, the 2-megapixel camera on the Echo Show 5 may not deliver the best video call experience, and the 960 x 480 resolution display is not the most luxurious for viewing photos.
However, if you frequently use Alexa, have limited space, and want an affordable yet capable display, the Echo Show 5 is a sensible choice at this price point.
