Labour MP Retreats From Leadership Challenge But Sets September Deadline For Starmer Exit

Under Labour Party rules, at least 20% of the parliamentary party must back a challenger to initiate a leadership contest. West had aimed to meet that threshold, positioning herself as a catalyst rather than a candidate.

Labour MP Catherine West has stepped back from her earlier threat to launch a leadership challenge against Keir Starmer, following his pivotal speech to the party on Monday.

The former Foreign Office minister had previously signalled her intention to gather support from 81 Labour MPs in order to trigger a formal contest. However, she has now paused that move, despite maintaining that the prime minister should stand down later this year.

West’s shift in position comes in the wake of Labour’s heavy losses in last week’s local elections, which have intensified internal pressure on Starmer’s leadership.

She made clear she did not intend to replace Starmer herself, instead hoping her actions would prompt other senior figures to step forward. In response to growing discontent, Starmer used his address to reassure colleagues, pledging to prove critics “wrong” and reaffirming his intention to continue leading the party.

Shortly after the speech, West released a statement acknowledging his effort but questioning its impact. She said: “I have listened to the prime minister’s speech this morning. I welcome the renewed energy and ideas.

“However, I have reluctantly concluded that this morning’s speech was too little, too late.”

September Deadline Set For Leadership Transition

West pointed to the recent election results as evidence of deeper issues within the party’s leadership. She added: “The results last Thursday show that the prime minister has failed to inspire hope. What is best for the party and country now is for an orderly transition.

“I am hereby giving notice to No 10 that I am collecting names of Labour MPs to call on the prime minister to set a timetable for the election of a new leader [by] September.”

She also expressed gratitude to colleagues and supporters, stating: “I want to thank everyone who has been in contact over the weekend to offer good wishes. We need our best top team in place to fight the next election. We owe working people up and down the country nothing less.”

The decision to delay an immediate challenge may ease pressure on Starmer in the short term, while giving potential contenders more time to prepare. Among those expected to consider leadership bids are health secretary Wes Streeting and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham—another figure frequently linked with a leadership run—could benefit from additional time to secure a parliamentary seat before entering the race.
