Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche have announced their decision to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for their electric vehicles (EVs). This move signifies a significant shift in the industry, as more and more automakers are recognizing the benefits of Tesla’s charging solution.
Starting in 2025, Volkswagen’s subsidiaries, Audi and Porsche, along with Scout Motors, will implement the NACS in their North American EVs. This means that VW EV owners will be able to take advantage of Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, which boasts over 15,000 charging stations across North America.
In addition to the Supercharger network, Volkswagen’s EVs will also be compatible with over 3,800 DC fast charging outlets operated by Electrify America and Electrify Canada. This comprehensive charging infrastructure ensures that VW EV owners will have convenient access to charging stations throughout their journeys.
What makes this development even more significant is the growing number of carmakers pledging their support for the NACS. GM, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes, Honda, BMW, Lucid, and several others have already committed to incorporating the NACS into their EVs within the next few years.
This widespread adoption of Tesla’s charging standard is a testament to its effectiveness and reliability. As more carmakers embrace the NACS, it is quickly becoming the de facto standard for EV charging.
Furthermore, charging network providers are also recognizing the importance of supporting the NACS. ChargePoint, a prominent EV charging network, has already begun rolling out support for the NACS across its stations since October. Electrify America also has plans to offer the NACS connector at its stations by 2025.
