Russian President Vladimir Putin has disclosed that the Kremlin is “carefully” considering the peace proposal put forth by African leaders regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the Russia-Africa summit held on Friday, President Putin confirmed that his country has already forgiven $23 billion in debt owed by African nations, highlighting Russia’s efforts to foster positive relations with the continent.
Putin addressed the significance of the peace proposal presented by African leaders during their visit to Ukraine in mid-June.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and other African leaders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and shared a 10-step peace initiative, garnering support from several African countries.
Speaking about the proposal, Ramaphosa emphasized the need for de-escalation of the conflict on both sides, seeking a path towards peace and resolution.
The peace initiative, however, faced a setback as Ukrainian President Zelensky firmly rejected any negotiations with Russia until the withdrawal of Moscow’s troops from Ukrainian territory.
He expressed his concerns, stating that engaging in negotiations while Russian forces occupy Ukrainian land would only serve to perpetuate the suffering and strife experienced by the people.
During the Russia-Africa summit’s first plenary session in St. Petersburg, President Putin emphasized the common desire for independence and sovereignty, unifying Russia and Africa.
In a subtle critique of the United States, he asserted that the era of hegemony dominated by one or more states is fading, but not without resistance from these nations.
Highlighting the importance of bilateral relations between Russia and Africa, Putin expressed that Africa would become a key partner for Russia in the emerging multipolar world.
Both sides sought to foster a partnership based on mutual respect and shared interests.
Moreover, the Russian leader pointed out that both Russia and Africa stand against the exploitation of climate issues, human rights protection, and gender-related matters for political purposes.
By voicing this stance, they aim to prioritize genuine cooperation and avoid allowing such crucial matters to be manipulated for political gains.
