The most recent Democrat to enter the U.S. Senate primary is Sen. Karla May, who hopes to challenge Republican Josh Hawley next year.

May competes in the primary field alongside St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell and veteran Marine Lucas Kunce.

May was elected to the state Senate in 2018 to represent parts of St. Louis and St. Louis County after serving in the Missouri House for eight years. She traveled to re-appointment last year, winning 74% of the vote in November.

May declared her goals throughout the end of the week at the Hill City Bar Affiliation, then, at that point, affirmed her appointment via web-based entertainment. A conventional declaration is booked for Tuesday evening.

On social media, her campaign stated, “As a long-standing champion for the rights and welfare of the citizens of Missouri, Sen. May has consistently demonstrated her dedication to serving the public.”

May was welcomed into the race by Kunce, who has a significant fundraising advantage over his two likely Democratic rivals.

“The state senator and I spoke on the phone ahead of the announcement,” Kunce said, “and we had a great conversation. I’m happy to welcome her to the race and look forward to seeing her on the trail.”

Whichever Democrats rise out of the primary faces an uphill fight against Hawley. In Missouri, Democrats do not hold any statewide elected office and have won only once statewide since 2012.

Last year, Republican Eric Schmitt defeated Democrat Trudy Busch Valentine by 13 percentage points to capture Missouri’s open U.S. Senate seat.
