Trump and other Republicans criticized the plea agreement reached by federal authorities with Hunter Biden on June 20.
A lawyer for Hunter Biden claimed that his client was taking responsibility for his actions while he was struggling with drug addiction. Trump and others criticized the agreement for letting Hunter Biden off easy.
On June 20, Trump stated that the Department of Justice gave the president’s son a free pass in a post on his Truth Social platform.
“Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere ‘traffic ticket.’ Our system is BROKEN!” Trump wrote.
“People are going wild over the Hunter Biden Scam with the DOJ!”
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden “love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life,” according to a White House spokesperson. The spokesperson stated that no further remarks would be made.
Christopher Clark, a lawyer for Hunter Biden, said: “I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
Trump and others had said that Hunter Biden, who has been the subject of an investigation for a long time, would get special treatment because his father is the current and former vice president of the United States.
Last week, Trump entered a not-guilty plea to 37 federal charges related to classified documents. In a New York state court in March, he pleaded not guilty to 34 charges related to business records. In both of these unprecedented cases, Trump pleaded not guilty.
The pending investigations in Washington and Georgia may result in the filing of additional charges against the former president; Both investigations stem from Trump’s challenge to the results of the 2020 election.
‘Sweetheart Deal?’
The arrangement with Biden’s son was referred to as a “sweetheart deal” by several prominent Republicans. Hunter Biden, 53, may not serve time in prison if a judge follows the prosecutors’ recommendations.
When juxtaposed with allegations of the Biden family’s multimillion-dollar dealings with foreign interests, the misdemeanor offenses of filing taxes and violating weapons laws would be minor. Congress is still investigating the allegations of influence-peddling.
The Trump campaign released a statement indicating that the former president recently predicted Hunter Biden’s leniency under the heading “President Trump Was Right.” In a post on Truth Social on June 6, Trump stated, “They’ll hit Hunter with something small to make their strike on me look “fair.” “
According to Kash Patel, who was in the Trump administration, the plea deal is evidence of a two-tier system in the Justice Department. Patel had previously stated that Hunter Biden would face light charges.
“Called it: the two-tier system of justice has now established its permanency under Biden admin,” Patel said.
“Never in my career as a federal public defender and national security prosecutor have I ever seen such disparate treatment based on your last name. This is no celebration ‘I told you so’ moment, but the completion of weaponized justice in America by FBI and DOJ leadership.”
To sabotage his bid for president in 2024, Trump asserts that authorities have been criminally investigating and charging him. He cites rising or steady ratings in opinion polls as evidence that he is the Republican nomination front-runner and has an advantage over Biden.
In a post on June 6, Trump wrote that Democrats and Vice President Joe Biden are “using the DOJ and FBI against me to [rig] the 2024 election.”
The former president shared the posts of political activist Jack Posobiec, who wrote: 100-year prison sentences for Trump for filing paperwork and a laptop-related plea deal for Hunter. Are you still paying attention?
On Twitter, legal scholar Jonathan Turley wrote: “Years of investigation into Hunter appear to have evaded any serious inquiry into the influence-peddling operation of the Biden family. For critics, it will be like ticketing the get-away driver after a bank holdup.”
A constitution-advocacy organization’s head attorney, Mike Davis, tweeted that Hunter Biden’s plea could provide congressional investigators with important access.
“Silver Lining: Hunter Biden can no longer plead the Fifth,” Davis wrote. “House Republicans should issue subpoenas immediately for his documents and testimony.”
