Taylor Swift Announces New Album ‘Midnights’ After VMAs 2022 Speech

Supporters also thought Swift was giving them yet another clue when she showed off her sparkly ensemble — which was similar to a “Look What You Made Me Do” music video look — on TikTok using Blackpink’s song “Pink Venom,” which could be a nod to the snake imagery she used throughout the “Reputation” era.

Taylor Swift announced at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday that she will release a new album in October.

“I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out Oct. 21,” the 32-year-old singer said while accepting the award for Video of the Year.

She then teased, “I will tell you more at midnight,” before later announcing the fitting title of her forthcoming project: “Midnights.”

“We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back,” she wrote alongside an image of the album cover.

“We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t — right this minute — about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.”

Swift explained that her new album is a collection “written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face.”

Taylor Swift announced her forthcoming album, “Midnights,” after the VMAs.

Swift posted an official countdown to her website before making the shocking announcement, which stated under a ticking clock, “Meet me at midnight.”

The website eventually crashed at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Many fans believed the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer hinted throughout the show that she would re-release her 2017 album, “Reputation,” next.

She first teased the new project while accepting Video of the Year at the 2022 VMAs.

Swift told fans during Sunday’s award show that winning Best Longform Video was “an indication we did something right,” a line her Swifties are all too familiar with.

One Twitter user noted the similarity to a lyric from Swift’s “Reputation” song “Call It What You Want,” in which she repeats, “I did one thing right.”

The singer said she thought teasing her new album at the show would be “fun.”

“WE DID SOMETHING RIGHT????? SHES THROWING EASTER EGGS EVERYWHERE,” the viewer wrote alongside a clip from the superstar’s acceptance speech.

Swift made the decision to re-record her first five albums after her former label, Big Machine Records was purchased by Swift’s nemesis manager Scooter Braun.

“I’m very excited about it because I think that artists deserve to own their work,” the “Wildest Dreams” singer said on “Good Morning America” in 2019. “I just feel very passionately about that.”

Since then, Swift has released re-recorded versions of “Fearless,” originally released in 2008, and “Red,” originally released in 2012.
